We are very pleased to be able to report that the former Sydenham Road School in Dundrum has been deemed suitable for the proposed Gaelcholáiste. The School building is currently owned by our patron the County Dublin VEC and has not yet been designated for any other long term use. We have been told that the building is eminently suitable, would require no additional planning permissions and could be made ready for the Gaelcholáiste at comparatively low cost were it to receive department recognition.

We have been told that the total cost of any refurbishment necessary to equip the Gaelcholáiste to the highest modern standard would be under €3m. This compares very favourably to the recent costs involved in setting up similar secondary schools on green field sites in the county which range from €20 million to €25 million.

This latest development clears the only remaining hurdle to the establishment of the new school. At our meeting in 2007 with the previous Minister, having recognised the clear demand for the new school, she sited the cost of accommodation as the only major obstacle to the setting up of the Gaelcholáiste. We believe the current Minister should agree with this assessment.

The Sydenham Road school building is very near the LUAS stop in Dundrum (see map) and so would be extremely convenient for most students from Scoil Bhríde, Lios na nÓg and GS Thaobh na Coille. The No.75 bus from Knocklyon stops outside the door. It is practically within walking distance from Scoil Naithí and is adjacent to 44 and 48A bus-stops and there are relatively straightforward public transport possibilities for those students from Harold’s Cross (18 bus to Ranelagh LUAS).

In our opinion there is now no reasonable obstacle to the department’s granting us the provisional recognition necessary for the new school to open in 2009: failure to do so cannot be defended on the basis of economics, student need or government policy.

We ask you to lobby the department, the Minister and your local representatives on our behalf so that your children’s rights to further education in the national language can be met.
